Предстои изборът на нов върховен жрец на ацтеките. Само този, който извае най-сложните и елегантни скулптури на пернатата змия Кетцалкоатъл ще впечтали боговете и ще се увенчае с престижния пост на върховен жрец! 

В Коатъл играчите се състезават за точки престиж, като създават възможно най-стойностните скулптури на Коатъли. Те се изграждат от глава, опашка и множество сегменти от тялото в различни цветове. Играчите разполагат с набор от карти с "пророчества", които носят точки, ако бъдат изпълнени. Пророчествата, от своя страна, представляват различни условия (последователност от сегменти), които играчите трябва да следват при изграждането на Коатълите. По време на своя ход играчите може или да взимат сегменти от общото табло с ресурси, или да си набавят нови карти с пророчества, или да използват събраните елементи, за да изграждат своите Коатъли. Освен стандартните действия, играчите може да изпълняват и специални действия, с които да се измъкнат от затруднена ситуация или да си осигурят ценни ресурси, особено когато някой опонент им е отмъкнал под носа някой необходим сегмент.

Краят на играта настъпва, когато един от играчите завърши третия си Коатъл. Играчите получават точки престиж за изпълнените пророчества, а този с най-много точки бива обявен за нов Върховен жрец!

Играта печели със своята голяма преиграваемост и красиви компоненти, изисква известна доза комбинативност в духа на игри като Азул, а също и възнаграждава играчите, когато избират правилния момент за всяко свое действие.
