Значителни части на книгата са писани, ако мога така да се изразя, по горещите следи на късните легални срещи, които българските научни среди имаха с тези автори и техните идеи, когато можеха публично да ги коментират. Всъщност едва тогава, когато през 80-те години се откриха известни възможности да се говори и пише за тях без полагане на идеологическо клеймо, а по-инициативните редактори бяха готови да поемат премерени рискове.

Някои от частите на книгата са текстове, подготвяни в процеса на работата ми върху един или друг автор, с оглед съставителството и представянето на първите издания у нас на техни основни трудове. Текстовете се публикуват такива, каквито са били – свидетелство за това как съм възприемал и оценявал идеите им по онова време, но също така и за границите на възможното говорене. Разбира се, те са прецизно редактирани, но без допълнително „осъвременяване“, без ползването на нова литература и нови извори. Те предшестват преводите на български, ето защо всички позовавания в тях са на базата на оригиналните издания, с които съм работил по онова време, и в мой превод. По-късно много от книгите на Барт, Лотман и Еко бяха преведени и читателите лесно биха могли да открият съответните интересуващи ги пасажи.
